Rudy and Liesel both join a street gang. The group steals food, something they mostly do out of hunger and a desire to rebel against the war. When the Hitler Youth comes calling, Rudy becomes a part of the group but not because he wants to. Rudy becomes a member of the Hitler Youth because he is afraid of repurcussions against his family if he refuses.
