What does the act of book thievery teach Liesel about life and death?

Stealing books doesn't so much teach Liesel about life and death, as it teaches her how words become connections. The mayor's wife still feels connected to her son through their memories of reading before the fire, just as Liesel steals The Gravedigger's Handbook as a token of remembrance for her brother.
