Max's ugliness was a direct result of his circumstances. He fought for money and lived with the guilt he felt for leaving his family behind without his protection. He saw himself as a coward for running away, but the ugliness is really simply buried in his own mind. The Max we come to know is loving and caring, he's kind..... and he puts his concern for the Hubermann's before the worries he has for himself.
