The Book Thief

The Book Thief

What is being compared?     Why is this an apt comparison?

Sometimes there was humor in Max Vandenburg's voice, though its phsysicality was like friction-like a stone being gently rubbed across a large rock.

Max has been fighting his private intense war for survival. There is much anger in Max which he has trouble reconciling. All his stresses combined with his own fighting nature sucks much of the humor from his personality. Still, he does manage to make others laugh but that effort is compared to, friction-like a stone being gently rubbed across a large rock.
