Rosa Hubermann, Hans' wife, is Liesel's new mother. Rosa is tough as nails, even with Liesel, who she isn't quite prepared to care for, but does her best regardless. Rosa is strict and unbending, and she doesn't hold back from giving Liesel a besting when she misbehaves. Irregardless of these traits, however, she also has a big heart and cares for Liesel deeply..... she simply doesn't know how to show it. Her love for Max is apparent.

In terms of the war.... Rosa is afraid. Hans and Rosa struggle financially in a world that has gone out of control. Friends are being arrested, businesses destroyed, and food is scarce. On top of all this, she and Hans protect and house Max, a young Jew, whose presence is cause for arrest.
