The Book Thief

Need help with questions for a Book Thief test

The main quotes I am having trouble with is "I am stupid....And kind. Which makes me the biggest idiot in the world....I want them to come for me. Anything's better than this waiting."

I'm not sure what you need to know in reference to the above quote. In context, Hans says these words while waiting to be arrested by the Gestapo. He'd given some bread to prisoners on the road and expected reprisals. As a result, Max also needed to leave his home, as Hans' arrest would likely be a reason to search..... and Max, of course, was hiding in the basement. At this moment, Hans is waiting for the Gestapo, all while wondering if they won't come after all..... and wondering if he'd been foolish to let Max his home, which possibly wasn't dangerous after all. In his heart, he wondered if Max had actually been placed in more danger. In the end, Hans never received the "punishment" he expected.
