Belonging is a central theme in the Book Thief. All the main sympathetic characters want to belong. They all find this sense of belonging at the Hubermann home. Liesel desperately needs a home as does Max. Belonging and sense of place allows the whole family to survive the most terrible ordeals. The Hubermann home had a metaphorical glow to it that meant belonging and home. It was a refuge from the very harsh world that always threatened them beyond their doorstep.
