Both Liesel and Max feel a profound sense of loss. They both had their families taken away from them. The war has punished them both. Liesel is marked out because her father was a communist and Max is marked out because he is a Jew. Both find refuge in the Huberman home where they can articulate their fears and dreams to each other. Max feels guilty for not preventing the SS from harming his family and Liesel feels guilty that her brother died and she lived. Both find solace in each others company and misery.
