Hans Hubermann's accordion became a symbol of hope and comfort. It kept spirits up and comforted everybody in the Hubermann house during the darkest of times. For Hans, the accordion was a symbol of the man who gave it to him, Erik Vandenburg, Max's father. Eric had saved Hans's life, it symbolized survival.
Books symbolized truth, knowledge and culture. The Nazi book burnings were an attempt to eradicate a whole culture and identity. Liesel rescued but a few. She also rescued the ideas in them and was able to pass those ideas on; ideas are bullet proof.
