How was Rosa's behavior challenging by Max's arrival?

Rosa becomes motherly after Max' arrival. She seems almost happy to have him. Maybe having him there makes her feel closer to her son. None-the-less, Liesel didn't see the explosion of anger she expected from her foster mother. She saw a woman thrilled to have someone enjoying her pea soup.
