How can the reader tell that Death is intrigued with Liesel?

I assume you are referring to Arrival on Himmel Street. Death tries to keep away from Liesel doing his other duties but feels compelled to return:

"Several times I warned myself that I should keep a good distance from the burial of Liesel Meminger'd brother."
