Hitler's birthday brings a grim sense of closure for Liesel. She realizes that Hitler is the reason behind her mother's disappearance and that, because of Hitler, she will never see her again. Lesel changes from this moment forward.
"Did the Führer take her away?" ch 19
I think Liesel finally comes to terms with herself and her life with her lat words of the book,
"I have hated the words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right." Ch 10
