About part 1

Hans only supports the Nazi party to the extent that such support helps keep his family safe. He argues against the Nazis with his son who is a devoted Hitler supporter. He buys Mein Kampf when it seems politically correct to do so (as suggested by his son). He offers a Jewish man a piece of bread when some Jews are being marched through his town. He takes the punishment from the soldier rather than see this Jewish man suffer.
