In what ways might Hans Hubbermann have been a hero and not a coward as he had been accused by his son?

Hans was most certainly a hero for many reasons. He took in a young orphan and became her father, he kept a promise to an old friend and protected that man's son in a way that could have meant his own life. He did his part to serve his country, all while not believing in its course of action. He was brave in every way.
