Dates confusion

After Daniel receives Susan's letter in Book 1 he refers to M.L.King and Bobby Kennedy deaths, or more precisely to the fact that they were still alive by the time the "Christmas" Susan referred to took place. But how can Daniel know they will die if he is writing in 1967 and they both died in 1968?
