Writing a paper on The Bet. Not sure why the lawyer stayed in capitivity till the end of the bet when he had the opportunity to leave capitiviy at anytime.

The lawyer stayed in captivity to prove he could do so, to prove that living was a better alternative to capital punishment ... he left five hours early for the same reason. The bet wasn't about the money... it was about the ideals. In the end, the lawyer is bitter and filled with hatred. The story's open ending, leaves us as readers to wonder what happened afterward.
