The lawyer basically reads books for fifteen years. He reads famous authors who impart the wisdom of the ages. The lawyer learns that desire for material possessions is the root of all sorrow. He also learns that vanity, including wanting one's opinion to be right, also causes sorrow. This is why he breaks the bet just before the time is up.
