Could the bet have led to a positive outcome?

This question calls for "your" opinion. In my opinion, had the lawyer walked away from the bet, he might have had a chance for a happy future..... making a mark in his profession, and possibly going onto to have a family. In the end, we don't know what the lawyer's future help and are left to wonder.
