Based on what you have read, how could Chekhov’s writing style be considered ironic?

Chekov uses dramatic irony in setting up the bet, using vivid descriptions to describe lawyer throughout his years in incarceration in the home, and then, when it's finally over..... having the lawyer abandon the bet and lose merely to prove a point.
