Esther's finds Doreen sophisticated and mature. She intimidates Esther by not conforming to the same expectations that Esther follows. Doreen is a problem for Esther, for she places Esther in difficult situations. Doreen represents a mature and unhindered female sexuality that threatens Esther, who decides not to associate with Doreen after she cares for her when Doreen comes home from her boyfriend's apartment ill with a hangover. Esther must navigate between two worlds. There is the sexually unfettered but risky world of Doreen and the heavily regulated, safe, world she has grown up in.
