What is the thematic significance of the fact that "after you pluck them, they lose their fragrance"?

I think the delicate flowers represent the women in this story. Some like Turtle and Lou Ann have been used and abused mostly by men. If a person suffered long enough they can die inside, they can lose their fragrance.
