Lou Ann is steeped in the tradition of marital relations lasting forever and the illusion of family bliss. She pines for a father figure (her father died in a tractor accident) and one gets the sense that she gets the husband/father figure thing mixed up. Mama has snippets of "wisdom" from growing up on a hog farm. Her advice often involves woman's best shot at life involving finding a husband.
