When Robert tries to cuddle with Mrs. Pontellier, she considers it an annoyance and pushes him away. Her decision to do so may or may not have been the correct response, but the point of the incident is that for Mrs. Pontellier, each interaction with Robert will be a new experience that she will have to interpret on her own.
