How does the gift Edna receives from her husband symbolize her marriage and most marriages of this time?

For Edna, the gift was not significant. She was used to the gifts, as they were regularly received.... her husband was often away. The gifts was a symbol of affection.... partnership. Like many marriages of the time, their marriage was not a great romance.
