Jane is sent to talk to Mr. Bone alone, he both owns and runs the plantation where she'll be working. At first, Mr. Bone thinks Jane is to small to employ, that her work will be lacking due to her size, but Jane's spunkiness and tenacity pay off and he hires her anyway (at a reduced rate of course). Before long, Janes proves herself as the hardest worker amongst the women, and Mr. Bone almost doubles her salary.
