What does this teach us about how we study recorded history? What should we / shouldn't we do?

I'm sorry, I am not sure what you mean by "this". True students of history peruse multiple records.... they take nothing as fact, and they are willing to look outside the box. History, as written, is heavily shaded by opinion, and in many cases, shaded by subjectivity.
