"Nightmare" describes the world Malcolm lived in as a child. His home was set afire twice, his father, Earl Little, a Baptist preacher, was murdered, after which, the state welfare agency tries to break up his family. Over time, fighting to keep her family fed, in addition to keeping the family together, proved too much for Malcolm's mother and she was committed
to a mental asylum. As a result, her children were sent to various foster homes in the region.
