Malcolm feels that light skin changes the way you're treated by others. He notes that at the time, parents seemed to instinctively treated lighter skinned children better. He believed this occurred because they'd been brainwashed into thinking white skin was better. Malcolm became aware at an early age that a person's skin color directly effected how he or she was treated.
