    Doris sees herself as an independent woman who is better than others. She is a stylish woman who has to have the best clothes and live a lavish lifestyle. She lies to others to make herself seem more important. How people see her is important to her. She likes for people to be jealous of her.

    How does Doris make a living to afford her materialistic lifestyle?

    Doris affords her materialistic lifestyle in Berlin by sleeping with various men who then support her. She does not see this as using them or prostituting out herself for material gain. She does what she must to afford her clothing and lavish lifestyle.

    Why does Doris leave Ernst when she has fallen in love with him?

    Doris loves Ernst but knows that he is still in love with his ex-wife. She wants to be the one and only in a man’s life. This leads her to leave Ernst. She does still love him so she lets his ex-wife know that Ernst still loves her and she should return to him.
