The Alchemist (Coelho)

Why is it important that Santiago dreams, in the abandoned church, of a child who tells him of his treasure?

He falls asleep using the book that he keeps with him at all times as his pillow. During the night, he has a dream that he has had several times before, a dream he has never been able to fully understand. It is important because the child, perhaps representing Santiago's divine inner voice, compels Santiago to look beyond his mundane existence.
