I think he chose for Santiago to work in a crystal shop because crystals are delicate, they are a metaphor for one's own delicate Personal Legend. The Crystal Merchant says that, "The fifth obligation of every Muslim is a pilgrimage. We are obliged, at least once in our lives, to visit the holy city of Mecca." Now that he can leave his shop the merchant says he is scared to pursue his personal legend because he might be disappointed. Santiago does not fear the same way as the merchant. Santiago feels compelled to go. Santiago must follow his quest, it is his destiny regardless of the outcome.
