Santiago believes that his treasure includes the knowledge and wisdom that he has gained in his journey of achieving his dream. He also believes that meeting and falling in love with a Fatima was also a part of his treasure. He was happy and satisfied that he had travelled and came to know "the soul of the world", which far more than any other shephard knew.

According to the book, the real treasure are not always material.Obtaining material wealth may or may not be a part of one's life purpose, but regardless of the end-result.Every experience, no matter how small or large or whether it is percieved as positive or negetive comes with an opportunity to learn and grow.
