The Alchemist (Coelho)

What was the significance of Santiago becoming a shepherd rather than a priest, as his parents had hoped?

Why has he made this choice? What does being a shepherd allow him to do? Please explain

Santiago would rather know the world than study scripture or learn about mans' sins. He wants to see other lands and see how people live. Santiago seeks truth in being shephard and he seeks God in his travels.
