This has allusions to the Holy Bible. When Santiago follows his friend into the marketplace in Tangler, he puts his faith in God that he and his money will be safe. When the stranger leaves with Santiago's money,

He was so ashamed that he wanted to cry. He had never even wept in front of his own sheep. but the marketplace was empty, and he was far from home, so he wept. He wept because God was unfair, and because this was the way God repaid those who believed in their dreams"(39).

One might consider the story of Job in the Old Testament. Job too put his faith in God but was disappointed. Like Job, Santiago must believe and perceiver despite his setbacks if he is to achieve his final reward.
