Santiago’s jacket represents life's burdens. Santiago carries the jacket with him in Andalucía because it keeps him warm during the long cold nights. Unfortunately, it “becomes a burden when the sun burns brightly during the day” (Page 32). Thus, the jacket seems to be a curse during the day and a blessing at night. The jacket may symbolize the times when Santiago wants to give up because of life's obstacles and burdens but doesn't. It illustrates that in the long run..... tenacity pays off.
