This is a pretty detailed question for this short answer space but I can make a general statement. We can follow Santiago's journey through the stages of Dr. Joseph Campbell's the hero's journey. Santiago crosses the threshold by selling his sheep and taking a boat to Africa. He feels conflicted because, “He had to choose between something he had been accustomed to and something he wanted to have.” 24 Santiago then goes through the stages of the hero’s journey coming out of it with a changed perspective. Through his many experiences, Santiago sees meaning in nature he did not see before. He sees a new worth in the things he has and the people around him.
