The alchemist chooses Santiago because his greatest desire is to find his Personal Legend. The Englishman's greatest desire, however, is to find the secret of turning metal to gold..... of amassing a fortune. Santiago is willing to learn the lessons before him..... the Englishman wears blinders that prevent him from observing the world around him.
