Melchizedek's purpose is to seek out people and tell them about their personal legend. He needs to find Santiago and Santiago needs to find him.
Santiago falls in love with Fatima. They both need each other but they must wait until Santiago finds what he is looking for.
Santiago needs to work for the Crystal Merchant in order to continue his journey. The Crystal Merchant needs Santiago to open his eyes to change and achieving his own legend.
