Explain the significance of the motif of dreams.

Dreams are significant in the novel because they not only represent one's innermost desires, they also provide a conduit to the Soul of the World. Santiago's dreams reveal his personal legend, dreams also provide symbols that when interpreted properly can serve as warnings.
