There are a lot of them through the book. Santiago faces many challenges and must many decisions..... unfortunately, each challenge leaves him ready to abandon his quest, and thankfully, he doesn't. Santiago faces the unbearable desert heat, a lack of water, and a sandstorm. While in the Arab Market, a thief steals his money, and his ensuing journey leads him through the midst of tribal war. Emotionally, he battles with his desire to stay with Fatima, but it all works out just fine in the end.
