Tom joins the Cadets of Temperance so he can wear the red sash and fancy costume. The group must swear to stop cursing, drinking, gambling and any other "bad" vice. Tom can't handle this so he resolves to hang on until Judge Frazier, the justice of the peace, dies, because then he can wear his red sash in the public funeral. When the judge recovers, Tom resigns from the Cadets. The judge suffers a relapse and dies that night.
