The "gilded dome" is found in Chapter XXI and refers to the name given to Mr. Dobbin's bald head. The children were in the middle of geography class when the sign painter's son lowered a cat from the ceiling........... as the cat scratched and flailed in the air the children became increasingly boisterous until finally it was level with the school master's head and duly clawed the wig from Dobbin's head......... school vacation thus began; mission accomplished!

Tom's superstitions:

1. You can remove warts with a dead cat

2. A pact signed in blood is binding

3. The devil won't collect a soul on a Sunday
