fence scene and tom's trickery

What makes the fence scene an example of guile on tom's part?

Guile = trickery.  Tom is doing this Saturday work as a punishment, but he makes the other boys think he is being honored by being trusted to whitewash the fence.  So the other boys beg for a turn and even offer trinkets in trade for a chance to help with the painting.  Tom fools them into doing his chore.  Talk about "whitewashing"!
