Families can come in all kinds of configurations. Sure, I would consider Huck and Jim to be close enough to be brothers. Huck transcends the prejudice of the time to find a kindred spirit in Jim. I don't think Jim harbours too much ill will, that's just not in his nature. Tom and Huck aren't family. Tom only shows up near the end of Huck Finn. We can see a decided separation between the two boys in terms of values and motivations. Tom has accepted the status-quo of Southern culture much more than Huck has. Tom attempts to help Jim because of the adventure rather than on any moral grounds. I think Huck has evolved apart from Tom.
