why is huck surprised that jim cares so much for his kids

Huck is surprised that Jim cares almost as much about his family as a white person would. I think Huck simply has never gotten to know a black person. He has been taught to regard them as slaves, even sub-human. Huck is quickly learning that Jim is more "human" than anyone he knows.
