Why is huck surprised at Tom's willingness to rescue Jim? Why does Tom do it?

Huck is surprised at Tom's willingness to help an escaped slave. Tom isn't doing this for Jim rather than as a challenge to his intellect and sense of adventure. Tom likes the rebellious aspect of this as well as hatching some long drawn out plan; unlike Huck, he cares little for Jim.
