Why does Jim say "I's rich now"? In what ways are people rich?

Jim just wants to be free. Being free, even while running away, makes him feel wealthy. His dream is to come up with $800 to buy his own freedom. I think the implication is that "rich" can mean different things to different people. Simply to be alive and free is being "rich" to Jim.
