Why does Huck trust the magic Hairball's advice more than Jim's?

Despite teasing Jim about his superstitions, Huck has a supernatural bent. He puts stock in the African superstitions that Jim presents. The hairball's predictions about Pap capture Huck's imagination more than Jim's very common sense approach.
