The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

What is life like on the raft? How do they dress? What could Twain possibly be saying in this depiction?

Life on the raft was slow going. Huck and Jim only traveled at night, and when they moved with the current, they were sometimes able to make four miles per hour. The two travelers improved their shelter by building a wigwam. Huck had a ritual, in which he'd slip ashore every evening and pick up some food..... if he didn't have enough money, he'd occasionally steal a chicken. Early morning were spent much the same way, as Huck would wander into the fields for corn, pumpkins, watermelons..... whatever was available. I will have to look further to find information on clothing.
