This tells us that both boys have a real friendship. Ordinarily, a black slave could never talk like that to a white person. Jim feels safe enough with Huck to call him on his nasty trick. Huck also apologizes to Jim. Apologizing to a black person is certainly something whites would never do in the South during this era.
